Our Services
Internal Family Systems therapy, also called IFS or parts work, helps you understand and heal the different parts of yourself that drive how you think, feel, and react. At KC Counseling Group, our Missouri-licensed therapists offer this evidence-based approach to clients across Lee's Summit and the surrounding Kansas City area. If you feel pulled in different directions inside, or stuck in old patterns rooted in past trauma, IFS offers a calm, compassionate way to find relief.
IFS is built on a simple but powerful idea: your mind is naturally made up of many parts, and none of them are bad. Some parts protect you, some carry old pain, and at your core is a calm, wise Self that can lead. When these parts are in conflict, you can feel anxious, stuck, or at war with yourself. IFS helps them relax and work together.
In IFS, your therapist helps you get to know your inner parts with curiosity instead of judgment. You learn to notice the part that criticizes, the part that worries, or the part that shuts down, and to understand what each one is trying to do for you. From a place of calm Self-leadership, you can help the parts that carry pain to unburden it. The work is gentle, collaborative, and paced so you always feel in control.

Internal Family Systems (IFS): Reclaiming Inner Harmony
At KC Counseling Group, our IFS-trained therapists offer a powerful, compassionate approach to healing known as parts-work. Developed by Dr. Richard Schwartz, Internal Family Systems (IFS) is an evidence-based model built on the understanding that our minds are naturally made up of different "parts," like the inner critic, the people-pleaser, the perfectionist, or the part that carries deep hurt and anxiety.
We know that no part of you is inherently bad; each one is simply doing its best to protect you from pain, often using survival strategies that leave you feeling exhausted or conflicted. Our collaborative approach helps you safely get to know your inner system, moving you toward a place where you can:
Restore Inner Safety: De-escalate the internal conflicts that leave you feeling stuck, allowing your mind and nervous system to return to a state of alignment and ease.
Compassionately Understand Your Triggers: Learn why certain parts of you react intensely to stress, shifting from self-criticism to curious self-awareness.
Unburden Trapped Pain: Gently access and heal the deeper, wounded parts of your psyche that are still holding onto old trauma, beliefs, or emotional weight.
Access Your "Self": Connect with your core Self, the calm, curious, and creative center of your being that holds the natural capacity to lead and heal your life.
Every plan follows your pace and meets your inner system with respect, never force.
"There are no bad parts. Every part has a positive intention, even if its behavior is counterproductive or destructive."
Richard C. Schwartz, No Bad Parts: Healing Trauma and Restoring Wholeness in the Internal Family Systems Model
Many approaches try to get rid of the parts of you that feel like problems. IFS matters because it takes the opposite view: every part has a positive intention, even when its behavior works against you. When you understand and heal these parts instead of fighting them, the change tends to last. You move from being at war with yourself to leading your life from a place of calm and clarity.
At KC Counseling Group, Internal Family Systems therapy is compassionate, collaborative work led by clinicians who are licensed in Missouri and trained in parts work. There are no bad parts of you, only parts that need to be understood. Our role is to help you lead them from your calmest, most grounded Self.

Answers to common questions about Internal Family Systems therapy at KC Counseling Group.
IFS, also called parts work, is an evidence-based approach that sees the mind as made up of different parts, along with a calm core Self. It helps you understand these parts, ease their conflicts, and heal the ones carrying pain. The goal is inner balance and lasting change.
Many therapies try to reduce or get rid of unwanted thoughts and behaviors. IFS instead gets curious about the part behind them, treating every part as having a positive intention. This compassionate approach often reaches the root of patterns that other methods only manage on the surface.
Your therapist helps you notice and get to know your inner parts, one at a time, with curiosity rather than judgment. From a calm, centered place, you learn what each part is trying to do for you and help the parts carrying pain to release it. The pace is gentle and always led by you.
IFS may be a good fit if you feel torn between different parts of yourself, struggle with a harsh inner critic, or stay stuck in patterns you cannot think your way out of. It is also gentle and effective for people healing from trauma who want to feel more in control of the process.
It depends on you and what you are working through. Some people feel relief fairly quickly as inner conflicts ease, while deeper healing takes longer. Your therapist reviews your progress with you and adjusts the plan. Most clients meet weekly, especially at first.
