Somatic Therapy

Trauma disconnects the body from the mind. Somatic therapy invites you back home to yourself, restoring the safety you deserve.

Somatic therapy is a body-based approach that helps you release stress and trauma held in your nervous system, not just talk about it. At KC Counseling Group, our Missouri-licensed therapists offer this care to people across Lee’s Summit and the nearby Kansas City communities, so healing reaches the body as well as the mind. If anxiety, tension, or the weight of past trauma lives in your body and will not ease through talk alone, somatic work gives you a gentle, evidence-based way forward.

Our bodies keep score of what we have been through. When stress or trauma is not fully processed, it can stay stored as muscle tension, a racing heart, shallow breathing, or a constant sense of being on alert. Somatic therapy works with these physical signals directly, helping your nervous system settle so you can feel calmer, more present, and more at home in yourself.

How it works

What Somatic Therapy Involves

Somatic therapy pairs conversation with gentle attention to what is happening in your body. Your therapist helps you notice sensations like tension, temperature, breath, and posture, and use them as a guide.

Rather than pushing you to relive painful events, the work moves at a pace your system can handle, so you build a felt sense of safety instead of becoming overwhelmed. Over time, your body learns to release the survival energy it has been holding and to return to a steadier baseline.

Somatic Experiencing

The Path to Regulation: Understanding Somatic Experiencing

Rather than focusing solely on thoughts or the retelling of traumatic events, this approach works "bottom-up" by helping you tune into physical sensations and bodily responses. It guides you to gently release the survival energy, like fight, flight, or freeze, that has become trapped inside your body.

When we experience overwhelming stress or trauma, our nervous system prepares us to survive. If that defensive energy is not fully discharged, it gets locked in the body, showing up as chronic anxiety, hypervigilance, depression, muscle tension, or emotional numbness. Talk therapy addresses the cognitive "top" of the brain, but Somatic Experiencing begins at the "bottom," the nervous system and the body.

In a session at KC Counseling Group, we do not force you to relive your darkest moments. Instead, we work at a pace that respects your system’s current capacity. By tracking physical sensations, such as changes in your breathing, posture, heart rate, or internal temperature, we help you slowly renegotiate trauma.

Through this gentle tracking, your body learns to complete the natural protective reflexes it could not finish during the overwhelming event. The result is a profound shift in your baseline: your nervous system expands its capacity to handle stress, your body learns that the danger has passed, and you can finally return to a state of genuine ease, presence, and safety.

Why it matters

Why Somatic Therapy Matters

You can understand exactly why you feel anxious or shut down and still feel stuck, because insight alone does not always calm the body. Somatic therapy matters because it reaches the physical level where stress and trauma actually live. When your nervous system learns that the danger has passed, the changes tend to hold. You do not just think differently, you feel different in your body and in your daily life.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the questions people ask most before reaching out. If yours is not here, bring it to your free consultation.

What is somatic therapy?

Somatic therapy is a body-based form of counseling that treats stress and trauma through the nervous system, not just through conversation. It helps you notice and release physical tension so your body and mind can settle. The goal is lasting calm and a greater sense of safety.

How is somatic therapy different from regular talk therapy?

Talk therapy works mainly with your thoughts. Somatic therapy adds the body, since stress and trauma are often stored physically. By tracking sensations like breath, tension, and posture, it reaches places that talk alone can miss, which is why it often helps when other approaches have stalled.

What happens in a somatic therapy session?

Your therapist guides you to notice what is happening in your body, gently and at your pace. You will not be forced to relive painful events. Instead, you learn to track sensations and let your nervous system release stored stress, building a felt sense of safety over time.

How do I know if somatic therapy is right for me?

It may help if you feel anxious, tense, or on edge in your body, if you have trouble relaxing, or if talk therapy has not fully relieved how you feel. It is also a strong fit for people healing from trauma who want a gentle, body-aware approach.

How long does somatic therapy take?

There is no single timeline. Some people notice more ease within a few sessions, while deeper work takes longer. Your therapist checks in on your progress and adjusts the pace to your nervous system. Weekly sessions are common early on.

Do you offer somatic therapy outside of Lee’s Summit?
